healing trauma

Trauma reactions can be very different depending on the person involved and the nature of the trauma.  What is common to most trauma reactions, however, is that they are able to be healed in the context of a supportive relationship with accurate education and concrete coping tools.

TRAUMA REACTIONS

Several mental health diagnoses are, at their heart, a reaction to trauma.  This might mean the presence of negative elements such as violence, tension or contant criticism

  • not feeling real
  • not feeling like the same person from one day to the next
  • unstable relationships
  • lack of reactions
  • impulsive behaviors like self-harm
  • difficulty depending on or trusting other people
  • being very fearful

TRAUMA DIAGNOSES

Depending on the constellations of trauma reactions that a person experiences, they may have one or more diagnoses that are related to their trauma.  These can include:

  • Acute Stress Disorder
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Borderline Personality Disorder (also known by some as Complex Trauma Disorder)
  • Narcissistic Personality Disorder
  • Eating Disorders (Anorexia, Bulimia, or Binge Eating Disorder)
  • Depersonalization disorder
  • Derealization disorder
  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Major depressive

Healing from trauma

Trauma responses require a very special combination of approaches in order to heal.  First, you cannot do it alone.  A supportive and caring relationship is required - especially if the trauma took place in the context of a relationship.  Second, you need real-world skills to manage the onslaught of overwhelming emotions that trauma may place in your path (alternatively, many people also need help to awaken after trauma-induced feelings of deadness or numbness).  You need to understand and reckon with the impact that trauma has had upon your life.  Third, you need to begin to learn that you deserve more - and that you deserve to finally find your freedom.
